Colas Rail UK’s Freight division has signed a new contract with Network Rail to provide Thunderbird rescue and recovery services in the Eastern Region.
The contract is scheduled to begin in January 2026 and runs for an initial period of three years. It includes an option for extension for up to a further three years.
Under the terms of the agreement, Colas Rail Freight will supply rescue and recovery capability using two Class 67 locomotives. These will be allocated to Newark Northgate Sidings, from where they will be available to respond to incidents affecting both passenger and freight services.
The Thunderbird role involves the recovery of failed trains to reduce disruption on the network. On the East Coast Main Line, this includes helping a range of freight operating companies and train operating companies when required.
The service will be available on a 24-hour basis, with crews and traction positioned to allow deployment along one of the UK’s busiest mixed-traffic routes.
