Clayton Equipment, a locomotive manufacturer based in Burton upon Trent, has filed a notice of intention to appoint administrators.

The filing was submitted at the end of November providing the company with a short period of protection from creditor action while options for the business are reviewed, The Business Desk informs.

The company was established in 1931 and has been active in the design and manufacture of specialised locomotives for mining, tunnelling, metro and mainline rail applications. Its production has focused on tailor-made vehicles for environments with strict operational and regulatory requirements.

In recent years, Clayton Equipment has worked on low- and zero-emission traction technologies, including battery-powered, trolley-powered, hybrid and alternative diesel locomotive designs.

According to its latest published accounts for the financial year ending 31 August 2024, the company recorded a loss of slightly more than GBP 1 million (EUR 1.2 million). Over the same period, the workforce decreased from 46 to 40 employees.

Clayton Equipment supplies customers in the United Kingdom and abroad, delivering custom-built locomotives for industrial and rail infrastructure projects. The notice of intention initiates a formal process during which the company’s future structure and ownership may be assessed.
