Marcel Theis, currently Chief Operating Officer and long-time deputy to Flore, has been appointed to take over the CEO role on 1 January 2026.

SBB Cargo International will undergo a leadership change at the end of this year, as CEO Sven Flore is set to leave his post after leading the company since 2018. His involvement in the group will continue: from January 2026, he will move into a part-time function within Asset Management at SBB Cargo Switzerland, focusing on the ongoing procurement process for new mainline locomotives.

Marcel Theis has worked closely with Flore for many years, during which the company expanded its activities along the north–south freight corridor and established operations in the Netherlands and France. The period also included the rollout of a new enterprise planning system, intended to unify planning and control processes across the company.

Theis has been responsible for day-to-day operational execution of SBB Cargo International’s strategy since 2014. Between 2023 and 2025, he also headed SBB Cargo Deutschland GmbH, where he oversaw a restructuring of the German subsidiary. Earlier in his career, he held various managerial roles at CFL Cargo.

The future CEO holds a degree in information technology from the Cologne University of Applied Sciences, specialising in business information systems. He is 53 and lives in Sissach in the canton of Basel-Landschaft.
