Originally appointed in 2017, Lutz’s agreement was set to run until 2027. The termination has been decided by mutual consent.
The announcement follows discussions between the Federal Minister for Transport, Patrick Schnieder, Deutsche Bahn’s Supervisory Board Chairman Werner Gatzer, and the CEO. Lutz will remain in his role until a successor is appointed.
The Federal Ministry confirmed the change as part of a wider personnel and structural realignment. No successor has been named, but the Supervisory Board is expected to begin a formal selection process.
The leadership change coincides with a broader reform initiative. The Transport Minister is scheduled to present a new railway agenda on September 22, titled “Agenda for Satisfied Customers on the Railways.” This is expected to outline key reforms for Deutsche Bahn.
The ministry emphasized the sequence of strategy preceding appointments and stressed that the selection process for the next CEO will prioritise careful evaluation over speed.
