Ivan Bednárik has been appointed as the new CEO of the Slovak state railway infrastructure manager, effective from 15 May 2025.

Železnice Slovenskej republiky (ŽSR), the railway infrastructure manager in Slovakia, has announced a change at the highest management level. Alexander Sako, who had held the position of CEO since 7 November 2023, has stepped down.

The appointment of Bednárik was made following the recommendation of the Supervisory Board of ŽSR. Bednárik has previously served as an advisor to the Slovak Minister of Transport and to the management of ŽSR. His professional background includes various managerial positions across the transport sector, including board and supervisory board roles.

A substantial part of Bednárik’s career was spent at České dráhy, where he served as CEO of ČD Cargo, and later led the parent company České dráhy. He brings experience from his nearly eight-year tenure within the ČD group.

During his period as CEO, Alexander Sako initiated several structural measures for ŽSR, which employs around 13,000 people. His activities included addressing human resources matters and co-developing a company-wide consolidation plan as well as the ŽSR Strategy document, which has been prepared as a guideline for the next management.

Sako stated his resignation was for personal reasons. He cited political pressure regarding his personal property as the reason for his departure.
