The history of rail transport in Estonia starts in 1870 when a line was opened connecting Paldiski, Tallinn, Tapa and Narva. Because of the Russian influence the line was built to 1524mm gauge which the country uses to this day. Railways in Estonia are today used mostly for freight transport, but also for passenger traffic, with 8.3 million passengers reported in 2019. Total rail length is 1 200 km.
