Heidelberg Materials UK has placed an order for the first production Class 08e battery-powered shunter from Positive Traction.
The Whatley-based Class 08 shunter will be upgraded with battery power, new electronics, and advanced control systems. During its trial, the prototype Class 08e demonstrated its ability to haul 1,000-tonne aggregate trains across the quarry’s internal rail network.
The production model will include six upgraded PTPowerpod batteries, a significant increase from the two fitted to the prototype, delivering a capacity exceeding 600 kWh. According to Positive Traction, this capacity is designed to handle a full shift under heavy load conditions. Enhanced traction and auxiliary systems will also be installed, reflecting insights gained during testing.
