The contract, worth up to £150 million over five years with potential extensions, is a key part of Network Rail's efforts to modernize one of the UK's busiest rail networks.

AtkinsRéalis Group Inc. has been appointed by Network Rail to renew and upgrade the signalling and telecommunications infrastructure in its Eastern Region, which includes over 6,000 miles of track. AtkinsRéalis was selected as one of two suppliers for Lot 2A (general signalling and telecoms) under the Eastern Routes Partnership, the primary route for Network Rail projects in the East.Lot 2A has a total value of up to £150 million over five years, with an option to extend in annual increments up to £300 million for up to five years. AtkinsRéalis will be responsible for the renewal and improvement of interlockings, level crossings, networks, trackside equipment and telecommunications.

“Rail networks are facing new and increasing demands from passengers and businesses, meaning modern signalling and communication are essential to providing sustainable, reliable transportation,” said Ian L. Edwards, President and Chief Executive Officer, AtkinsRéalis.

The Eastern region stretches from the borders of Scotland to London and has some of the busiest rail lines in the UK, with 6,000 miles of track representing almost a third of the UK's rail network. It helps carry many commuters and heavy freight to and from busy cities including Newcastle, Leeds, Sheffield, Derby, Norwich and Cambridge. Network Rail's investment programme to renew and upgrade the infrastructure is needed as much of the existing track and signalling is over 40 years old.

“The Eastern region is critical to the UK's overall transportation network, connecting millions of people every day across some of our biggest cities and moving the highest amount of freight across all regions,” commented Richard Robinson, President, UK & Ireland, AtkinsRéalis.
