Developed by Stadler at €230 million, the vehicles combine electric, battery, and diesel power sources.

ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG has unveiled the first of 18 new hybrid service jets, a massive upgrade from the old diesel rescue trains. Developed by Stadler at a cost of €230 million, these high-tech vehicles promise faster, safer and more environmentally friendly operations.

These new service vehicles have many advanced functions to offer. They can run on three different power sources: overhead power, a powerful 280 kWh battery and two diesel generators. These locomotives can reach speeds of 160 km/h either way, giving you the muscle to haul trains of up to 2,000 tonnes or jump-start stranded trains.

The trains have state-of-the-art fire-fighting equipment, including high- and low-pressure water cannons, thermal imaging cameras, and hydraulic rescue tools. Each jet has an evacuation capacity of more than 300 people, which is invaluable in an emergency. They also have advanced ventilation systems to keep out smoke and heat and carry 40 cubic meters of water for firefighting.

“In the event of an emergency, our new service trains will enable us to assist even faster than before. They provide more power in a larger operational area. The new concept also enables a reduction from 21 to 18 vehicles,” said Johann Pluy, ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG Board Member.

The new Koralm railway, which includes a 33-kilometre tunnel, will be the first to be used. Eventually, the service jets will be deployed throughout the entire ÖBB network. The start of the project is planned for 2022 and, as functional tests are currently underway, the start of the approval process is planned for 2024.
