České dráhy (ČD) has moved closer to deploying a new generation of battery-electric multiple units, with the first vehicles now undergoing testing at the Velim test centre, one of Europe’s key rail proving grounds.
The trains, built by Škoda Group, are part of a fleet of 15 new battery-powered RegioPanter units that are due to enter passenger service by the end of March 2027. Four of the newly built trains are currently being tested at VUZ Velim, where a control day and demonstration run were held this week.
From a European rail perspective, the significance lies less in the individual regional routes and more in the continued rollout of battery traction as an alternative to diesel on non-electrified lines. The trains are intended to combine operation under overhead wires with battery-powered running beyond electrified sections, allowing operators to avoid diesel traction while maintaining through services.
For manufacturers and operators, Velim plays a central role in that process. The testing of the new units at the Czech facility underlines the importance of independent validation, homologation support and operational testing as battery fleets move from pilot projects towards larger-scale deployment.
The new trains will supplement an earlier group of battery units already in service since late 2024.
