Romania’s Autoritatea pentru Reformă Feroviară (ARF) has selected Siemens Mobility to supply 12 hydrogen-powered electric multiple units for passenger services.
The award follows the evaluation of the sole bid submitted and receipt of an unconditional clearance from the National Agency for Public Procurement (ANAP).
The contract covers the supply of 12 hydrogen fuel cell multiple units and associated maintenance and repair services required for their operation. A revision clause allows ARF to extend the maintenance period by an additional 30 years through an addendum, without launching a new competitive procedure.
According to the government-approved feasibility study and technical-economic indicators, the multiple units will be allocated to passenger operators under public service contracts. Allocation will follow the national methodology for distributing newly acquired rolling stock.
The trains are planned to operate on non-electrified routes including Bucharest–Pitești, with an extension to Piatra Olt–Craiova, Bucharest–Henri Coandă Airport, Bucharest–Târgoviște, and Bucharest–Pitești–Curtea de Argeș.
The project was initially financed through Romania’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure’s Managing Authority is currently seeking an alternative funding source to support implementation.
