Alstom has selected several Ukrainian manufacturers to supply components for the UA8AC dual-system electric locomotives ordered by Ukrzaliznytsia.
The localization scope includes the production of radio communication equipment, locomotive safety and fire alarm systems, brake system components, couplings, driver’s cab heaters and seats, as well as elements of the sand supply system. Separate negotiations are ongoing regarding the domestic production of wheels, a strategically important component given that locomotives typically undergo around 10 wheelset replacements during their lifecycle.
Ukrzaliznytsia provided Alstom with a list of domestic companies involved in rolling stock maintenance. Based on this, Alstom conducted monitoring and a competitive selection process to identify suppliers capable of meeting the project’s technical and quality requirements.
The procurement follows an international tender financed by the World Bank, which attracted interest from six rolling stock manufacturers from Europe and Asia. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development later joined the financing of the project.
The UA8AC locomotives are based on the Traxx Hauler platform and will be the first European-built electric freight locomotives supplied to Ukraine. Designed for operation under both alternating and direct current systems, the locomotives will offer a maximum power output of up to 9,000 kW, a top speed of 120 km/h, and a starting tractive effort of 800 kN. They will also feature modern control systems and improved working conditions for locomotive crews.
