SŽ-Potniški promet has signed two procurement contracts for new rolling stock intended for cross-border operations. The order includes 20 new passenger coaches and four multisystem locomotives for international passenger transport.
The contract for passenger coaches was awarded to Magyar Vagon Group. The batch comprises 15 standard coaches and five multifunctional ones, intended for use across Slovenia and several neighbouring countries. Delivery is scheduled between June and October 2028.
The multifunctional coaches will include spaces for three wheelchairs, 12 bicycles, an information point and a bistro section. Accessibility features for visually and hearing-impaired passengers are also part of the design. According to the operator, the new vehicles will be compatible with existing rolling stock, allowing integration into current formations.
All coaches will be air-conditioned and equipped with power sockets, USB ports (A and C), onboard Wi-Fi, passenger information displays, and a reservation system. A passenger counting system will show real-time data on seat, bicycle and wheelchair space occupancy. The coaches will be certified for operations in Slovenia, Austria, Croatia, Hungary, Germany, Serbia, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
Siemens Mobility will supply 4 MS Vectron locomotives with Slovenia, Austria, Croatia, Hungary, Serbia, Germany, the Czech Republic and Italy (up to Trieste) country package. Their maximum speed will be 200 km/h. The delivery is scheduled between April and May 2027.
The full investment is valued at EUR 97.7 million (including VAT), a portion of the funding—EUR 43.9 million—is covered by the Slovenian Climate Change Fund, which co-finances public passenger transport projects under the 2025–2028 national programme.
According to SŽ-pp, the investment will increase autonomy in international rail operations, enabling cross-border connections without changing locomotives. The aim is to raise the reliability and efficiency of services while reducing energy and maintenance costs.
