PKP CARGO, currently undergoing restructuring, has completed an electronic auction for the sale of freight wagon wrecks withdrawn from operation.
The wagons designated for sale consist largely of retired coal wagons, many of which have been out of service for extended periods. According to the company, around 10% of the wagons have not operated for more than a decade. Other wagon types included in the lots are described as technically obsolete and unsuitable for current or future operations.
As part of the disposal process, PKP CARGO classified the wagons under European waste code 16 01 06, rendering them ineligible for re-registration or reuse. The bidders were required to hold valid waste processing permits for the same category, legally obligating them to ensure complete disposal.
The remaining unsold lot is expected to serve as a source of spare parts during periods of higher seasonal demand before being included in future auctions. The wagons are not compatible with intermodal operations, and no wagons reserved for national defence were included.
PKP CARGO currently operates with a fleet of about 25,000 wagons, including a working reserve. Following the sale, roughly 10,000 wagons will remain in non-operational reserve, with some expected to be refurbished and returned to service to replace worn-out units.
