The batch delivered in April 2025 represents the beginning of the delivery cycle for this year. Earlier deliveries under similar configurations have already entered regular operation.

The first two Traxx Universal DC locomotives of 2025 have been delivered by Alstom to Mercitalia Rail. The handover took place at the Vado Ligure manufacturing site and forms part of a broader framework agreement covering up to 70 locomotives, to be supplied by 2027.

The full contract, valued at over EUR 323 million, includes both standard DC traction units and additional locomotives equipped with Last Mile capability. The Last Mile version incorporates a diesel auxiliary power module, enabling the locomotive to operate independently on non-electrified tracks. This function is particularly suited to freight access points such as terminals, ports, and industrial areas without overhead line equipment.

The locomotives are based on Alstom’s Traxx DC3 platform and are intended for deployment across the Italian national network. Units are designed to operate under 3 kV DC electrification and are configured for heavy freight operations. The inclusion of the Last Mile variant provides flexibility for route segments where electric infrastructure is absent or disconnected.

All 70 units are expected to be delivered by 2027, with serial production ongoing at Alstom’s Italian production site in Vado Ligure.

The locomotives will be used across Mercitalia’s freight services, supporting national and corridor-based flows. The delivery continues the gradual replacement and reinforcement of the operator’s electric traction fleet, with a focus on traction availability and operational adaptability under mixed infrastructure conditions.
