The ELASMO locomotive, upgraded under Romania’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), underwent trials between Bucharest Băneasa Station and Pasărea, with representatives from the European Commission and Romanian authorities in attendance, Profit.ro reports.
As part of the test program, the locomotive was used to tow 16 passenger cars between Bucharest and Cernavodă, demonstrating the operational capabilities of its asynchronous electric traction system. The modernization project includes the integration of a central control system developed by RELOC Craiova, alongside upgraded traction motors of the 060 EA1 CA type.
The ELASMO locomotive is one of 19 units undergoing modernization, with the project valued at €91.1 million. The contract, awarded through a public tender, includes maintenance services amounting to €47.5 million.
The RELOC facility in Craiova has a history of rolling stock design, manufacturing, and modernization spanning nearly six decades. The current program aims to extend the service life of existing locomotives while incorporating updated technology to meet operational standards.
