Korea Railroad Corporation (Korail) has announced the commencement of production for 108 new electric train cars, which will be introduced to the Seoul Metropolitan Subway Line 1, Suin-Bundang Line, and Donghae Line.

The first units are expected to be delivered by July 2027, replacing aging vehicles on key lines and supporting the planned extension of the Donghae Line to Buk-Ulsan Station. The project is set to integrate input from operational and maintenance departments into the production process.

The new trains are designed with updated structural and technical features aimed at improving operational efficiency and passenger experience. Key innovations include the use of permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs), which offer higher energy efficiency and reduced noise compared to traditional induction motors.

Additional features include:

  • Energy Optimization: Driver Advisory Systems (DAS) will guide optimal speed to improve energy efficiency and operational reliability.
  • Passenger Comfort: A double-floor structure and upgraded shock absorption systems have been implemented to minimize noise and vibration.
  • Better Information Systems: Digital route maps and dynamic passenger information displays will provide real-time updates.
  • Emergency Preparedness: New safety measures, such as emergency call devices with specific buttons for medical and fire incidents, are included to improve communication in emergencies.
