Alstom has entered into an agreement with Metrolinx to overhaul and modernize 181 Bi-Level Series VIII commuter rail cars used by GO Transit, the regional transit service in Ontario’s Greater Golden Horseshoe.
The modernization project, scheduled to begin by 2026, will be carried out at Alstom’s facility in Thunder Bay, Ontario. The scope of work will support around 250 skilled jobs at the site, with activities expected to continue until at least 2030.
Mid-life overhaul and upgrades
The Bi-Level Series VIII cars, originally manufactured between 2008 and 2015, are set to undergo mid-life upgrades. The planned improvements include the installation of USB-equipped power outlets, updated panelling and flooring, replacement of customer seating, enhanced accessibility features in lavatories, and energy-efficient LED lighting.
Long-standing relationship with Metrolinx
Alstom has been manufacturing GO Transit’s distinct green-and-white bi-level cars at its Thunder Bay facility for nearly five decades. Beyond production, the company has been involved in fleet maintenance, refurbishment, and operational support for GO Transit for over 25 years.
In 2021, Alstom secured a separate contract for refurbishing 94 Series VII bi-level cars. Additionally, the company has provided operational support, including train crews and customer service, across GO Transit’s commuter network.
