The announcement followed a meeting between the Ministry for Communities and Territories Development of Ukraine and EBRD representatives.

Ukrzaliznytsia (UZ) plans to renew its fleet with 80 dual-powered electric locomotives, backed by financing from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the World Bank.

The EBRD has agreed to provide a €300 million loan for the purchase of 50 electric locomotives. Additionally, grant funding from the World Bank's "Restoration of Critical Logistics Infrastructure and Network Connectivity" (RELINC) project will enable the acquisition of another 30 locomotives worth $190 million. This combined effort will expand Ukrzaliznytsia's locomotive fleet significantly.

Oleksandr Pertsovskyi, Chairman of the Board at Ukrzaliznytsia, emphasized the importance of not only updating the locomotive fleet but also implementing a distributed generation system on the railway network. This initiative aims to address electricity shortages during the winter months.
