DB Cargo plans to deploy at least 100 of these locomotives, targeting a reduction in fuel consumption by 1 million liters of diesel annually, alongside a 30% improvement in energy efficiency.

Toshiba’s HDB 800 hybrid locomotives, designed for DB Cargo, have been transferred to a test facility as part of their ongoing development. These hybrid diesel-battery locomotives are intended to help reduce fuel consumption and emissions, offering an environmentally friendly alternative for shunting operations.

The HDB 800, with a tractive effort of 300 kN and a power rating of 750 kW at the wheel tread, operates at a maximum speed of 100 km/h. It can run short distances on main lines to reach its designated shunting area. The modular design of the locomotive simplifies maintenance, allowing for easier access to components and potential upgrades.

The series hybrid system enables the locomotive to run on one or both power generation modules or its traction batteries, optimizing energy efficiency and resource conservation. Toshiba’s SCiB™ TypeS traction battery, power converter, and permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) are integrated for reliable and energy-efficient performance.

Key technical features include:

  • Modular vehicle structure for ease of maintenance and future upgrades
  • Redundant traction and auxiliary systems
  • Two power generator modules for optimized load distribution
  • Four PMSM traction motors for single-axis control and reduced maintenance
  • Dual driver’s desks with an option for remote control operation
  • Multi-traction capabilities, allowing for operation with up to four vehicles

The HDB 800’s emissions are reduced through the Stage V diesel engine, capable of running on synthetic fuels, while energy consumption is further minimized via recuperation and energy-optimized diesel engine use.
