KiwiRail has 66 DM locomotives on order from Stadler. The first two diesel locomotives, built in Spain, are currently on their way to New Zealand, with arrival expected in Lyttelton on the Southern Island by mid-October 2024. Upon arrival, these locomotives will undergo testing before they are integrated into the national rail network.
These locomotives are designed with improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions in mind, aligning with KiwiRail's goals for more sustainable transport solutions. This delivery follows the arrival of 10 DL locomotives from CRRC Dalian last year. Kiwi Rail also has 24 battery and diesel locomotives on order from Stadler.
Large order for flat wagons
In addition to the locomotives, KiwiRail has placed an order for 450 container flat-top wagons from PT INKA, an Indonesian manufacturer at the beginning of August. This order continues a series of collaborations between PT INKA and UGL Rail Services Pty, with previous orders dating back to 2021. The wagons will be delivered in multiple phases, with the final deliveries scheduled for completion by 2025. By December 2024, there are still ongoing deliveries of the previous order of 712 flat wagons for containers.
