GB Railfreight (GBRf) has recently expanded its fleet with four new Class 18 hybrid+ shunt locomotives, aiming to reduce carbon emissions in its operations. These locomotives will be deployed across GBRf’s sites, primarily supporting Supply Chain Operations (SCO) services for Network Rail. These services are essential for ensuring the timely delivery of materials and components necessary to maintain the safety and functionality of the railway network.
Manufactured by Clayton Equipment, and leased via Beacon Rail, the Class 18 locomotives feature onboard batteries that can be charged via a three-phase electric supply or through regenerative braking. They also include a diesel engine compliant with EU Stage V emissions standards, allowing for flexible and lower-emission operations.
This addition is part of GBRf's broader decarbonisation strategy, which also includes the future introduction of 30 hybrid Class 99 locomotives by 2025, transitioning all operational sites to renewable energy, and converting its van fleet to electric vehicles. The company has also implemented an electric vehicle incentivisation program for its staff.
