Lokaltog, a part of the traffic company Movia, has selected the supplier for 14 new battery trains set to operate on its routes in Zealand and Lolland-Falster. The decision follows a tender process initiated in November 2023, which attracted bids from three European suppliers: CAF, Siemens Mobility, and Stadler.
The tender, which included an option for an additional 10 trains, was closely contested by the pre-qualified suppliers. The tender process included a period of negotiation in the first half of 2024, culminating in the submission of final offers by the June 4 deadline. The interest from the bidders was considerable, indicating strong competition.
During the evaluation phase, two of the three offers were deemed conditional, meeting all the specified minimum requirements. The third bid, which included reservations, was excluded from consideration. After a thorough technical and legal review, the proposals from CAF and Stadler were found to be suitable, both offering competitive terms.
Ultimately, the contract was awarded to Stadler, subject to approval by Region Zealand's Regional Council in September 2024. Stadler's experience in manufacturing high-tech trains was a key factor, having produced over 2,000 electric trains and more than 400 battery trains, some of which are already operational in Germany.
Lokaltog anticipates finalizing the contract with Stadler in October 2024, pending regional council approval.
Lokaltog operates nine local railways on the islands of Zealand, Lolland, and Falster, covering a combined length of 338 km. The company, established from the merger of Lokalbanen and Regionstog in 2015, continues to serve as a key transport provider in the region, with Movia partially owning the company.
