DB Regio Mitte has introduced the first new Stadler FLIRT3 XL units (class 3428) into passenger service on the RB 81 (Trier–Koblenz) and RB 82 (Trier–Perl) routes.
The EMUs, built by Stadler, are entering service through a monitored test phase that will add around 2,500 kilometres per week under real operational conditions. This follows earlier testing totalling 5,000 kilometres. The test period is designed to assess performance in areas including passenger exchange times, on-board information systems, and wireless connectivity.
Each four-car FLIRT3 XL has 245 seats and a total capacity of 507 passengers. The trains include first-class seating, air conditioning, bike storage for up to 30 bicycles, accessible areas for wheelchairs and strollers, and two toilets – one of which is fully accessible. Onboard features include sockets, passenger information displays with real-time data, surveillance systems, and free Wi-Fi.
One feature specific to the MoselLux variant is the directional bike boarding system, enabled by exterior markings and internal layouts designed for efficient entry and exit through designated doors.
So far, eight units have been delivered. Full certification was granted in late July, and staff training is ongoing. Following the completion of electrification works, the units are also planned to serve the Moselweinbahn between Traben-Trarbach and Bullay.
