The Desiro ML units, operated by ÖBB under the “Cityjet” brand, are used for local and regional services across Austria.

Siemens Mobility has delivered the 250th Desiro ML electric multiple unit to ÖBB, forming part of an ongoing procurement process that began in 2010. The framework contract includes a total of 294 units.

The first Desiro ML trains entered passenger service in 2015 following a Europe-wide tender launched in 2010. The original order covered 70-metre-long three-car trainsets. A follow-up agreement in 2021 introduced the 100-metre-long four-car variant to the same series. Both variants are built for regional traffic and are deployed widely throughout the ÖBB network.

The delivery of the 200th unit occurred at the end of 2021. With the handover of the 250th vehicle in 2025, the remaining 44 units are expected to be delivered within the next stage of the contract. Deliveries have been reported as running according to schedule.

ÖBB uses the Desiro ML fleet to replace older rolling stock and serve urban, suburban, and inter-regional connections. The modular platform allows for operation in both high-density commuter segments and longer regional services.

The Desiro ML platform is used in several other countries under various specifications, but the Austrian version remains one of the largest and most consistent deployments of the type. The trains continue to form the backbone of ÖBB’s regional and suburban electric passenger operations.
