Stadler will supply seven new FLIRT electric multiple units to A-Train AB for use on the Arlanda Express service between Stockholm Central Station and Arlanda Airport.
New fleet for the airport rail link
The new trains are intended to replace the current Arlanda Express fleet, which dates back to 1999. The existing units are expected to reach the end of their operational life by late 2029, coinciding with the planned full commissioning of the Stadler-built FLIRTs.
A-Train AB will receive the first of the new vehicles at the end of 2029. Production is set to begin in late 2026 at Stadler’s site in the St. Gallen Rhine Valley, Switzerland.
Technical overview
The FLIRT trains will be configured for Nordic climate and infrastructure conditions. Each train will be 165 metres long with a width of 3.2 metres and a height of 4.38 metres. The weight per unit is specified at 342 tonnes. Trains will be fitted with dual access heights—1150 mm and 760 mm—to accommodate varying platform levels.
Top speed is listed at 200 km/h, with a maximum power at the wheel of 6400 kW and continuous power of 4000 kW. Starting tractive force is 320 kN. The trains are designed for operation under a 15 kV, 16.7 Hz AC power system.
Interior layouts allow for 323 seated passengers and a maximum standing capacity of 650. The increase in seating equates to more than 50% additional capacity compared to the current rolling stock. Interior features include separate seating zones, spaces for groups, and dedicated quiet areas. There are also provisions for passengers with reduced mobility, including wheelchair spaces and barrier-free access.
Maintenance and lifecycle support
The order includes a long-term service contract running for 15 years. The agreement covers vehicle maintenance and supports operational reliability over the lifespan of the new units.
This is Stadler’s first delivery for the Arlanda Express service. The FLIRT platform, already in use in multiple European countries, has been adapted to meet the specific requirements of A-Train AB in terms of layout, access, and passenger comfort.
The vehicles are intended for the single, non-stop 20-minute route between Stockholm Central and Arlanda Airport, which is one of Sweden’s busiest airport connections.
The procurement supports A-Train AB’s fleet renewal programme as it transitions from the current vehicle generation to a higher-capacity model adapted for airport express services.
