The first of seven trains will enter service this summer, connecting regions including Calabria, Basilicata and Puglia.

Hitachi Rail has introduced the first long-distance hybrid battery train, significantly reducing carbon emissions in southern Italy. This innovative development comes as Hitachi Rail prepares to deliver seven intercity hybrid battery trains to Trenitalia as part of a major €1.23 billion framework agreement to modernize the rail fleet with environmentally friendly alternatives.

Unveiled in Reggio Calabria, the first of these trains will enter service between Calabria, Basilicata, and Puglia later this year. An evolution of the Masaccio fleet, which will start operating on urban and commuter routes in December 2022, the new intercity battery trains feature hybrid technology capable of running on battery, electric, hybrid, and diesel power. This versatile energy approach, including a hybrid driving mode for energy recovery during deceleration and braking, is expected to reduce carbon emissions by up to 83% compared to conventional diesel trains,

Designed with a distinctive livery and interior, the trains combine technology with the comfort expected from intercity travel. Features include an innovative air conditioning system that adapts consumption to the number of passengers, improved bicycle racks, and ample luggage capacity. In addition, the trains can reach a top speed of 160 km/h and offer an acceleration of 1.10 m/sec^2, setting a new standard for rail travel performance.

Luca D'Aquila, COO of Hitachi Rail Group and CEO of Hitachi Rail Italy, highlighted the train's contributions to safer, more comfortable, and environmentally friendly journeys. “Our train is designed to make journeys even safer, more comfortable and greener, supporting Trenitalia in its goal of equipping the country with a fleet of modern trains for the benefit of passengers and the environment."
