These trains are expected to help improve regional accessibility and provide passengers with a more convenient and environmentally friendly way to travel.

In a significant development for Latvia's public transport system, the first Škoda 16Ev electric units have started passenger service with Vienā vilcienā (VIVI), Latvia's national railway company. Having overcome the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and regional geopolitical tensions, VIVI has introduced these electric trains as part of its efforts to modernize the country's public transport infrastructure.

Škoda Group has delivered a total of 32 electric trains customized for Latvia's needs. These trains are based on the RegioPanter model from the Czech Republic but have been adapted to the Latvian broad gauge, thus offering increased passenger capacity. Each train consists of four coaches, is 109 meters long, and has 436 seats. The trains have single-level boarding, which improves accessibility and efficiency.

These modern electric trains are equipped with air-conditioning, ergonomic seating, modern equipment, video and audio information systems, and Wi-Fi connectivity. They will run quietly, with lower noise levels than existing trains, and are designed for a maximum speed of up to 160 km/h (currently 120 km/h), with the potential for higher speeds where the railway infrastructure allows.

The introduction of these new electric trains will allow VIVI to consider the introduction of interval timetables on all lines, especially during weekday rush hours. This initiative aims to improve regional accessibility and offer passengers a more efficient travel experience, with connections to destinations such as Aizkraukle, Tukums, Skulte, and Jelgava.
