The new bridge replaces an approximately 100-year-old structure on the second track. The first of the two new bridges was already commissioned in July 2025.
As part of the final load test, three locomotives were used: a Class 2016 Hercules, a Class 1216 Taurus and a Class 1144. Together, they brought around 250 tonnes onto the bridge. According to ÖBB, the structure handled the load as planned and meets all safety requirements.
The new bridge is 62 metres long and crosses the Salzach at a height of around 12 metres. It has a steel structure, modern bearing technology and an optimised load-bearing design intended for long service life and reduced maintenance needs.
For passengers, ÖBB says the new structure should support more stable and reliable rail operations. The modern design is expected to reduce maintenance work and lower the risk of infrastructure-related disruptions.
Although the bridge itself is complete, final works around the structure may still cause individual restrictions between Schwarzach and Saalfelden until 3 July 2026. ÖBB advises passengers to check their connections before travelling.
