Lithuania is approaching a major milestone in its rail modernisation, as the Vilnius–Klaipėda line enters the final phase of electrification.
An electric train has completed its first test run on a newly electrified section between Kaišiadorys and Žeimiai, marking the start of system-wide testing on the country’s main rail artery.
The project, led by LTG Infra, covers 363 km of railway and represents the largest infrastructure upgrade in Lithuania’s rail sector. Once completed, the share of electrified lines in the country will increase from 8% to 28%, significantly reshaping the national network.
For rail operators, the electrification of this corridor is particularly relevant. The Vilnius–Klaipėda route connects the capital with the country’s main Baltic Sea port, making it a key axis for both passenger traffic and freight flows.
The ongoing testing phase includes nearly 40 operational and safety tests, covering power systems, communication, load capacity and emergency scenarios, ahead of full commissioning.
From a freight perspective, electrification is expected to deliver lower operating costs, higher capacity and improved efficiency, with electric traction enabling heavier loads and faster train preparation. Lithuanian Railways estimates that carriers could achieve substantial long-term savings through reduced energy and maintenance costs.
