Work is now focusing on the Lieboch–Köflach section of the Styrian West Railway after most of the Lieboch–Wettmannstätten–Wies corridor was completed in 2025. The next phase includes widening the Kremser Tunnel for electrification, modernisation of eight stations and construction of new bridges over the Södingbach, Gradnerbach and Kainach rivers. The section is scheduled for completion by the end of 2028, ÖBB declared.
Planning continues for the Graz–Lieboch section, where electrification will be combined with new underpasses, suburban transport hubs and an additional passing loop near Graz-Wetzelsdorf. The first works will start at Peter-Rosegger-Straße, where a new interchange between S-Bahn and city buses is planned. Further underpasses and transfer nodes are to be built at Wetzelsdorferstraße, Kärntnerstraße and Gradnerstraße. This section is to be completed by 2033.
In total, 91 km of line will be modernised, 16 stations upgraded, several level crossings removed or secured and one tunnel rebuilt. The project is intended to shorten journey times, improve service frequency and strengthen connections to Graz main station and the Koralm line. Electrification is also expected to reduce operating costs and improve fleet availability on the corridor.
The construction programme will require major line closures. The Lieboch–Köflach section will be fully closed from 11 July to 10 October 2026 and again from 7 January to 19 September 2027, with rail replacement bus services planned during both periods.
