10 construction and modernization plans for 2025 across Austria by ÖBB

Austrian State Railways have published the infrastructure works plan for this year.

1. Koralmbahn and Koralm Tunnel (Carinthia & Styria)

  • Passenger services on the Koralmbahn will commence in December 2025 after extensive testing and commissioning.
  • Freight traffic is scheduled to begin in October 2025.
  • Villach Central Station modernization is progressing, including platform extensions and improved infrastructure for passenger convenience.
  • Station upgrades at Arnoldstein, modernization of Lieser Bridge, and infrastructure improvements in Waidmannsdorf and Förderlach are ongoing.
  • In Fürnitz, the Villach-Süd marshalling yard modernization is planned, with long-term development continuing until 2040.

2. Vorarlberg infrastructure upgrades

  • Modernization at Klaus and Wolfurt stations includes barrier-free access, platform extensions, and enhanced Bike&Ride facilities.
  • Station improvements at Feldkirch and Bludenz, including expanded bicycle parking and upgraded passenger areas, are planned.
  • Renovation work on the Feldkirch-Buchs connection will continue without major restrictions in 2025.
  • A staging building will be constructed at Bregenz station as part of broader station redevelopment plans.
  • Environmental assessment for the "Klosterbogen" upgrade is expected to begin in February 2025.

3. Tyrol network improvements

  • Barrier-free upgrades at Fritzens-Wattens and Schönwies stations are progressing.
  • Renovation on the Inntal viaduct, including replacing arches, will continue.
  • Station improvements in Telfs-Pfaffenhofen and Rum are expected to conclude in 2025.
  • Planning activities for Innsbruck main station and Imst-Pitztal station are ongoing, alongside preparations for double-track expansions in the Oberland region.
  • Work continues on Brenner North Access, with excavation and environmental assessments advancing.

4. Salzburg modernization projects

  • Environmental discussions for the Flachgau tunnel and Köstendorf–Salzburg line are planned for January 2025.
  • Station upgrades at Maishofen-Saalbach, Seekirchen Stadt, and Gastein Valley stations will continue.
  • The Tauern Tunnel will remain closed until July 2025 for modernization work.
  • Accessibility improvements at Gries im Pinzgau and Hallein-Burgfried stops will be completed in 2025.
  • The Tauernmoos pumped storage power plant will see critical infrastructure installation in 2025.

5. Styria investments

  • In December 2025, the Koralmbahn will begin passenger services, significantly reducing travel times between Graz and Klagenfurt.
  • Electrification projects on the Styrian Eastern Railway and Western Railway (GKB line) are advancing.
  • Modernization of Ennstal railway stations and planning for Werndorf–Spielfeld-Straß double-track expansion continues.
  • Upgrades at Mixnitz-Bärenschützklamm station are scheduled for 2025.

6. Eastern Region (Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland)

  • Four-track expansion between Vienna Meidling and Mödling continues.
  • New station projects at Himberg and Silberwald include barrier-free upgrades and improved connectivity.
  • Work on the Pottendorf line, including Pottendorf-Landegg stop and Ebenfurth station, will progress.
  • Expansion plans for Vienna Airport–Bruck an der Leitha link are ongoing.
  • Improvements on the S-Bahn Vienna and Connecting Line (S80) will involve new stops and route upgrades.
  • Terminal Vienna South will undergo modernization for increased freight capacity.

7. Sustainability and renewable energy initiatives

  • Photovoltaic systems for traction power will be operational in Weißenstein and other regions.
  • Tauernmoos pumped storage power plant construction will continue in Salzburg.
  • ÖBB aims to cover 80% of railway energy needs through renewable sources by 2030.

8. Accessibility and mobility hubs

  • Upgrades at multiple stations focus on barrier-free access, extended platforms, and improved connectivity.
  • Park&Ride and Bike&Ride facilities will see expansion across regions, including Klaus, Wolfurt, and Feldkirch.

9. Key route closures and restrictions for 2025

  • Tauern Tunnel (Salzburg): Closed until July 2025.
  • Arlberg route (Tyrol): Periodic closures for maintenance.
  • "Brucker Schleife" (Styria): Closed in April 2025.
  • Himberg station (Eastern Region): Closed from February to November 2025.

10. Long-term infrastructure planning

  • Projects like the Brenner Base Tunnel and Schaftenau-Radfeld junction in Tyrol continue.
  • Urban development projects in Vienna (e.g., Nordwestbahnhof) are advancing through land redevelopment and site clearance.
