On 10 October 2024, the Jura government, SBB and Chemins de fer du Jura (CJ) signed the "Perspective générale Jura", a roadmap for the improvement of public transport infrastructure and services in the region. This joint initiative, which will evolve over time, aims to improve mobility and urban development in the canton of Jura. The objective is to increase the proportion of journeys made by public transport from 20% to 25% by 2030. Rail transport should become more attractive, accessible and sustainable through the proposed measures.
The canton of Jura is a key player in the French-speaking part of Switzerland and occupies an important place in the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) rail network thanks to its position as a bridge between the metropolitan areas of Basel and Lake Geneva and its location on the French border. The population (almost 75,000) and the number of jobs (almost 48,000) are growing rapidly, and Moutier will join the canton of Jura in 2026. The demographic and economic development of the canton requires a robust public transport infrastructure. This must be adapted to maintain and improve links between the regional centres of Delémont, Moutier, Porrentruy and Saignelégier.
The agreement also underlines the crucial role of rail freight in supporting regional economic growth and reducing road congestion, and was signed by David Eray, Jura's Minister of the Environment, Vincent Ducrot, CEO of SBB, and Jean-Frédéric Python, Director of CJ. The development of efficient freight transport solutions is essential, particularly in view of Jura's position as a key rail hub linking Switzerland with neighbouring countries, including France.
In order to improve passenger and freight transport and multimodal interfaces, 48 measures have been outlined. One of the main objectives is to develop a pragmatic approach to freight transport. This will ensure optimal access to the rail network and improve the cross-border movement of goods. Using the Alle transhipment platform is part of a wider effort to make rail freight more cost effective and sustainable, supporting the local economy while contributing to Switzerland's environmental goals.
