Renfe has chosen Alstom to supply and implement the ERTMS Baseline 3 system on 28 S/253 series locomotives for its freight fleet. The contract, worth €11.2 million, aims to increase interoperability between different networks and improve rail safety and traffic management for freight operations.
The ERTMS (European Rail Traffic Management System) system plays a vital role in unifying signalling and safety systems across European railways, facilitating seamless cross-border operations. By adopting this system, Renfe aims to enhance traffic safety and improve the efficiency of its freight services.
Renfe Mercancías launched a public procurement process to identify a supplier with the technical expertise and materials required for the successful implementation of the ERTMS system. Alstom was awarded the contract to supervise the manufacture, installation, and correct functioning of the system within the specified timeframe. The deadline for completion of the project requires both the supply and the installation of ERTMS on the 28 locomotives to be completed by 31 December 2025.
