The Austrian Bernegger Group, specialising on gravel and crushed stone production for the construction industry, has just opened its 4th siding in cooperation with Rail Cargo Austria. The location in Loebendorf means it will serve as a hub for the area around the capital and Lower Austria.
The CEO of ÖBB-Holding, Andreas Matthä, says: “We cannot achieve the climate targets without connecting railways. Every ton transported by train is 30 times more climate-friendly than by truck. For this reason, road freight transport must be switched to rail as early as possible. Bernegger shows how this can work. And they are not the only ones who think ahead and act with an eye to the future. Throughout Austria, numerous sidings are being reactivated, expanded and newly built. We want to thank the federal government and the province of Lower Austria because the rail freight subsidies mean that nothing stands in the way of the shift from road to rail.”
Bernegger’s cooperation with Rail Cargo Group is a long-term one. The opening of the Enns siding enabled a shift of half a million tons of cargo to rail, even the construction waste for recycling, supporting the circular economy. Bernegger has even tested RCG’s TransANT wagons for its 20’ open-top containers, reloadable by heavy-duty forklifts from road to rail and back.
