The intermodal solution operates on a nearly 300 km rail route from Rohrdorfer in Gmunden to Steinach am Brenner, with deliveries supporting works on construction section H53.

The CemTainer from Innofreight is being deployed in the construction of the Brenner Base Tunnel, transporting binding agents to the project site between Austria and Italy.

Designed for intermodal transport, the 22.5 ft CemTainer is combined with the 2×45 ft InnoWaggon and supplied by Rail Cargo Group. Each container carries up to 30 tonnes of binding agents and is transferred directly from rail to truck at the siding for the final kilometre to the mixing plant, where unloading is carried out using compressed air and a tipping mechanism.

The system enables rapid transshipment via gantry crane while minimising storage requirements at the construction site. In block train operations, around 40 containers per week will deliver approximately 1,200 tonnes of binding agents to the Brenner Pass.

The Brenner Base Tunnel, extending 64 km beneath the Alps, is scheduled for completion in 2032. By the end of the current construction phase in 2029, around 80,000 tonnes of binding agents are expected to be transported using the CemTainer system for the interior construction of the twin tunnel tubes.
