Lineas and FS Logistix have set up a joint venture named Modalink to take over the management of the Antwerp Mainhub terminal. The new entity, controlled 70% by Lineas and 30% by FS Logistix, will also operate feeder intermodal services within the Port of Antwerp. FS Logistix’s share in the joint venture may increase to 49% in the future.
The terminal covers 200,000 square metres and is equipped with 8 tracks of 700 metres each, 3 gantry cranes, and 6 straddle carriers. Its current annual handling capacity reaches up to 200,000 containers. Antwerp Mainhub is one of the central terminals in Europe’s second-largest port by TEU volume.
Modalink is tasked with both terminal management and organizing intermodal links between the terminal and the port’s inner quays. The creation of this venture comes alongside a shift in Lineas’ business focus, with the company now concentrating on traction services and discontinuing its activities as an intermodal operator.
As part of this shift, Lineas and FS Logistix are expanding cooperation on the Antwerp–Milan corridor. Mercitalia Intermodal, a company under FS Logistix, will operate the intermodal services on this route, while Lineas will remain responsible for traction. The route is served via Germany and France to ensure cross-border continuity.
The move also aligns with FS Logistix’s broader network expansion outlined in its 2025–2029 industrial plan. With this acquisition, FS Logistix gains access to a key logistics hub in Northern Europe, supporting its north–south (Belgium–Italy) and east–west (France–Romania/Poland) intermodal service plans. The joint-venture is intended to help offset projected capacity constraints at northern Italian terminals.
Both companies intend to use the Antwerp Mainhub terminal to improve operational flows across key corridors. The total value of the 30% share in the terminal has not been disclosed, and no financial details were included regarding the future increase to 49%.
