The transport involved 11 dedicated trains comprising 177 railcars, deploying five different railcar types to accommodate the diverse vehicle specifications.

SBB Cargo Switzerland recently transported approximately 350 Swiss Army vehicles, including tanks, trucks, off-road vehicles, and Sprinter vans, to Austria for the "TRIAS 25" military exercise held in April and May at Allentsteig, Lower Austria.

Around 1,000 Swiss military personnel participated in the exercise, aimed at assessing and practicing logistical procedures outside Switzerland, due to domestic spatial limitations.

Loading activities took place primarily in Thun, with additional loadings at Romont, Hinwil, and Domat/Ems. Most trains covered over 1,000 kilometers, routing via Basel and Passau, Germany, due to size restrictions in the Arlberg Tunnel. However, two trains took a direct route via Buchs.

Preparations for this substantial logistical task began months in advance. Special attention was required for secure loading and transportation, particularly due to the unique dimensions of some military vehicles.

Challenges emerged during transport operations, including unexpected obstacles such as track obstructions, last-minute construction works, and temporary line closures, necessitating rapid adaptations and coordination among SBB Cargo, foreign rail operators, and military representatives. Despite these issues during outbound journeys, return transports experienced fewer disruptions, reflecting adjustments made following initial experiences.
