Rail transport of containers through terminals managed by the Port Authority of Valencia reached 39,162 TEUs between January and February 2025. Compared to the same period last year, this represents a 4.53% year-on-year increase in units moved by rail. In terms of tonnage, however, the growth was more limited at 0.53%.
Rail accounted for 7.4% of total inland transport at Valenciaport during the period. The dominant share remained with road transport, which carried 426,074 TEUs – a 24.29% increase compared to early 2024.
Container throughput and trade routes
Overall container throughput in the port reached 863,894 TEUs during the first two months of 2025, up 10.34% year-on-year. The increase was driven largely by growing activity on several international routes. Notable volume shifts included:
- Angola: +2,201%
- Israel: +44%
- Algeria: +19%
China retained its position as the primary trading partner of the port.
Commodity segments
In terms of goods categories, growth was reported across non-metallic minerals, chemical products, construction materials, and agri-food shipments.
The data suggests a moderate increase in intermodal container rail activity, while road haulage continues to carry the majority of inland volumes to and from the port terminals.
