A new general cargo freight connection is now operational between the Reggio Emilia and Catania.
The connection is being developed through cooperation between Italtrade, Mercitalia Logistics, and Ignazio Messina. H-type wagons are being used for the transport, selected for their compatibility with this type of general cargo.
The launch of this rail service is part of a wider effort to increase cargo flows by rail between Northern and Southern Italy. While the initial frequency will be one round trip per week, the partners involved have indicated plans to gradually increase the number of rotations, with a target of up to six weekly connections in the long term.
The terminals at Dinazzano and Bicocca are already used for domestic and international intermodal traffic. This new link adds a further route option for shippers moving goods between the Italian mainland and Sicily. The service is operated within the framework of national rail freight offerings and complements existing logistics networks across the country.
