TRANSWAGGON, a wagon leasing company in the European rail freight sector, is marking six decades since its establishment.
Initially focusing on the development of multi-axle freight wagons to optimize payload capacity, TRANSWAGGON gradually expanded its operations with subsidiaries in Germany, Italy, and France throughout the 1970s. By the end of that decade, its wagon fleet had surpassed 3,000 units. The 1980s brought further technical advancements, including the introduction of aluminium sliding walls to reduce tare weight and the development of the Hiirrs sliding-wall wagon, which increased loading volume.
Growth continued into the 1990s, with the fleet exceeding 7,500 units following large-scale production efforts. A partnership with German leasing company VTG further shaped TRANSWAGGON’s position in the market. The early 2000s saw additional expansion, with the founding of WAGGON SERVICE in the Czech Republic and an increase in the fleet to over 9,500 units.
Over the past two decades, the company has focused on fleet modernization and digitalization. Notable steps included the acquisition of Swiss AAE’s sliding-wall wagons in 2016, bringing its total wagon count to more than 11,700. Efforts to reduce environmental impact led to the completion of its fleet-wide conversion to whisper brakes in 2020. That same year, TRANSWAGGON developed high-capacity wood chip containers to optimize loading efficiency.
A move toward digitalization began in 2021 with the implementation of SAVVY® telematics technology, equipping 13,500 wagons with tracking and monitoring systems. This initiative is set to continue with an additional 7,000 telematics units planned for installation over the next three years.
In 2025, the company is also commissioning modern double-deck car carrier wagons for flexible vehicle logistics, with the capability to transport heavier electric vehicles on the upper deck.
