The line has received a commissioning permit, allowing electric locomotives to transport goods to the Port of Hanko.

Electric freight operations have commenced on the Hyvinkää–Hanko railway line following the electrification of the section between Hyvinkää and Karjaa.

The transition to electric traction eliminates the need for locomotive changes between electric and diesel operations, allowing for uninterrupted freight transport along the route. VR Transpoint has introduced Vectron electric locomotives for operations on this section, with rail freight now powered by fossil-free electricity.

The electrification of the route also affects logistics at the Port of Hanko, as improved rail connectivity allows for more direct and continuous freight transport. The rail network's development is in line with broader transport and environmental objectives at both national and EU levels.

VR has stated that increasing the share of electric traction in freight transport is a priority, requiring further investment in railway electrification.
