The Lithuanian rail freight company LTG Cargo, part of the LTG Group, has begun registering its wagons in the European Vehicle Register (EVR), moving its operations further away from systems managed by the Moscow-based Railway Transport Council (GTT).

The initial step involved registering 196 freight wagons, marking the beginning of a process to integrate more closely with the European railway framework. The move allows LTG Cargo to perform transportation across the Baltic region without reliance on GTT systems. Previously, wagons operating on broad gauge railways were assigned eight-digit numbers in GTT-managed systems, whereas wagons registered in the EVR now carry twelve-digit identification codes.

New registration process in broad gauge context

The registration process included newly acquired grain wagons and 26 previously owned platform wagons for container and semi-trailer transportation. The platform wagons' inclusion required adjustments to the European registration system, as such wagon types had not been registered under EVR regulations before.

This development aligns with the LTG Group's ongoing "FREE Rail" program, designed to establish a rail operating model suited to the Baltic region and compatible with EU standards. The program emphasizes technological alignment with European systems and aims to transition LTG Cargo's wagon fleet entirely to the EVR by 2026.

Private fleet model and operational changes

As part of its operational transition, LTG Cargo discontinued the common fleet model within the GTT framework at the beginning of 2025, adopting a private fleet approach. This shift supports the company's broader strategy of aligning its business practices with European principles while operating on broad gauge infrastructure.

Regional integration and business operations

LTG Cargo continues its activities in the Baltic region and beyond, offering freight transportation, logistics, cargo loading, wagon and locomotive repair, and rental services. The company also operates subsidiaries in Poland and Ukraine, furthering its presence in European markets.

The ongoing transition to EVR registration and integration into the European railway system is part of LTG Cargo's broader plans to streamline its operations and establish resilience in its rail freight services.
