Initially established to meet the transportation needs of its owner, forest product company Stenvalls Trä, the terminal has since attracted cargo from additional industries in the region.

The Lövholmen Intermodal Terminal in Piteå has completed its first year of operations, serving as a logistics center for freight transport between northern Sweden and the Port of Gothenburg.

Strategically located near the E4 highway and key industrial sites, the terminal primarily handles sawn and planed timber from Stenvalls' four regional sawmills. Goods are transported by truck to the terminal, where they are loaded into containers and dispatched by rail to Gothenburg. From there, cargo continues by sea to markets in Asia, the USA, and Southern Europe.

Over time, the terminal has started accommodating a wider range of goods, gradually diversifying its operations. Rail transport frequency to Gothenburg has also increased from one weekly departure in each direction to two, with further increases planned. The terminal reports a 23-hour transit time to the Port of Gothenburg, with a recorded on-time performance rate of 93% within a two-hour delay window.

The terminal is equipped with loadplates for container stuffing and reachstackers for versatile cargo handling, and capable of managing hazardous goods, tanks, trailers, and containers. Collaborations with logistics providers such as APM Terminals, TFK Logistics, Hector Rail, and Träfraktkontoret play a role in the terminal's operational framework.

Lövholmen Intermodal Terminal is part of Railport Scandinavia, a network of nearly 30 inland terminals connected to the Port of Gothenburg. With regular rail departures, the network serves as a link between Sweden's inland industries and international shipping routes.
