Two freight trains collide in Poland, causing disruptions on railway lines in Silesia

In the early hours today at approximately 1:20 a.m., a freight train carrying grain derailed in Kuźnia Raciborska in the south of Poland.

Shortly after the first train derailed, a second freight train traveling in the opposite direction collided with one of the derailed wagons. The incident resulted in the suspension of rail traffic between Bierawa and Nędza on the Kędzierzyn Koźle – Chałupki line.

The driver of the locomotive that struck the derailed wagon, a 52-year-old man, was taken to the hospital for observation and later discharged. No other injuries have been reported.

Technical teams from PKP PLK (Polish railway infrastructure manager) are on-site and plan to begin rerailing operations before noon today. One track is expected to be cleared and operational by Monday. In the interim, long-distance trains are being rerouted through Sumina, Rybnik, Knurów, and Gliwice.

An investigation into the cause of the derailment and subsequent collision is underway under the supervision of the prosecutor's office.
