Six dual-mode locomotives are currently undergoing rigorous trials in Zwickau and Kreuztal, Germany, as part of a comprehensive testing phase.

Following their official presentation in March 2024, DB Cargo’s Dual Mode Vectron Light locomotives are being evaluated to ensure they meet operational requirements before being integrated into regular service.

The dual-mode locomotives are designed to operate seamlessly on both electrified and non-electrified tracks, combining the capabilities of electric locomotives with the flexibility of diesel engines. This makes them particularly versatile for a range of applications across Germany's rail network, including both long-distance hauling and demanding shunting tasks.

Extensive Trials in Real-World Conditions

The trial period, set to run until the end of June, involves a series of demanding scenarios to test the locomotives' performance. These include operations under heavy load, navigating steep gradients, and managing long-distance journeys. One of the key features being assessed is the locomotives' ability to switch effortlessly between electric and diesel modes, a critical function that underscores their dual-mode capabilities. Additionally, their performance in shunting operations, which has unique operational challenges, is being scrutinized.

The testing is being closely monitored and documented by on-site staff and the DB Cargo project team, ensuring that all aspects of the locomotives' performance are thoroughly evaluated. This includes assessing their reliability in various weather conditions and identifying any operational issues that may arise during the trials.

Initial Performance and Future Steps

After two months of testing, initial feedback from the DB Cargo Fleet Strategy department indicates that the dual-mode locomotives are performing as expected. They have shown reliable operation even under adverse weather conditions and have demonstrated potential time savings on routes that were previously serviced by diesel shunting locomotives under electrified lines. Minor issues identified during the trials are being addressed by the manufacturer, Siemens Mobility, in collaboration with DB Cargo to ensure optimal performance.

As the trials progress, the insights gained will be used to make further adjustments and refinements. The goal is to finalize these optimizations by the end of June, after which the series delivery of the locomotives is scheduled to begin in late summer 2024. By the end of the year, DB Cargo expects to have 30 of these dual-mode locomotives in operation, with the full order of approximately 150 units set for delivery by 2027.

Enhancing Efficiency and Flexibility

The introduction of dual-mode locomotives is a step towards better efficiency and flexibility of rail freight transport in Germany, especially in single wagonloads (SWL). Their ability to operate across different types of track infrastructure without the need for locomotive changes simplifies logistics and reduces operational complexities.

As the trials continue, DB Cargo remains focused on collecting comprehensive data to ensure these locomotives meet the high standards required for full integration into their fleet.
