This initiative is Union Pacific's second daily premium train route between these two major cities.

Union Pacific Railroad has introduced a new domestic intermodal rail service connecting Los Angeles and Chicago, aiming to reduce transit times to just three days. The service, operating daily, will transport goods from the City of Industry in Southern California to Northlake, Illinois, near Chicago's metropolitan area.

The trains will depart from Union Pacific’s intermodal terminal at the City of Industry and arrive at the Global 2 terminal in Northlake.

Jim Vena, CEO of Union Pacific, commented on the efficiency and environmental benefits of the new service, noting that the railroad's capability to offer 70-mph speeds is a competitive factor in attracting business. The service is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 75% compared to alternative transport methods.

Additionally, the service will facilitate faster freight interchanges with other railroads, particularly for goods heading to the Ohio Valley and the northeastern United States. The westbound journey from Global 2 back to the City of Industry and the Inland Empire Intermodal Terminal will also operate as a premium service.

Earlier this year, Union Pacific launched a direct domestic intermodal service from the Lance Fritz Inland Empire Intermodal Terminal in Fontana, California, to Global 2.. The Los Angeles metropolitan area, including the extensive warehouse district in the Inland Empire, and Chicago, as the third-largest U.S. city, are critical hubs in the nation's supply chain infrastructure.
