Mercitalia Intermodal's Smart Train project will see an additional 180 freight wagons fitted with advanced diagnostic sensors by PJM in 2024.

In a major step towards modernizing the rail freight industry, FS Group's Polo Logistica has announced plans to further expand its fleet of 'smart' freight wagons on the Italian and European rail networks. As part of Mercitalia Intermodal's Smart Train project, an additional 180 wagons will be fitted with advanced diagnostic sensors by PJM in 2024. These sensors, incorporating the latest communication technologies, are designed to collect a wealth of data during transit, facilitating real-time monitoring of train parameters for predictive maintenance, thereby increasing efficiency and safety.

This initiative is part of Polo Logistica's ongoing efforts to develop onboard solutions that use wireless communication systems to enable seamless interaction between the train's wagons and the driver and ground staff. The aim is to automate various operational processes and optimize rail-related activities, thereby improving overall performance.

The integration of PJM's WagonTracker system - a product of the Austrian company known for its specialization in digitized and automated rail freight transport - promises to improve connectivity significantly. This system provides instant access to vital data such as wagon geolocation, kilometers traveled, and the status of critical components such as braking systems and load conditions, thereby streamlining monitoring processes.

Since the start of the fleet upgrade in 2017, Mercitalia Intermodal has successfully converted more than a third of its freight wagons into 'smart' variants, establishing itself as a pioneer in digital monitoring and automated processes in the rail freight sector.

"By leveraging freight wagons, we can provide safer, faster, and more efficient services to our customers. Our intelligent wagon is an enabler for railway process automation and predictive and condition-based maintenance. Continuous monitoring of running dynamics, condition of critical components, wear, and other factors can lead to significant savings in productivity, maintenance, and rail safety," said Maria Antonietta Zocco, Technical Director of Mercitalia Intermodal.
