SBB Cargo International has started operating freight services on the Austrian rail network, expanding its cross-border activities beyond its existing markets.
The new operations provide an additional routing option for international services, particularly as an alternative to the Rhine Valley corridor. SBB Cargo International states that the Austrian route offers operational flexibility in cases of infrastructure closures or capacity constraints on established north–south axes.
By integrating Austria into its network, the company is extending cross-border connections for international freight customers. The additional corridor is intended to support more stable transport chains and maintain service continuity during network disruptions.
SBB Cargo International has not disclosed specific routes, volumes or customers linked to the Austrian start-up. The company positions the expansion as part of its broader focus on international rail freight operations within Europe.
