The procurement is part of Renfe’s wider fleet renewal programme aimed at replacing older vehicles, including stock from the early 1990s, which is approaching the end of its operational life. The new trains will be deployed across the Barcelona commuter rail network as well as on regional routes in the area. According to the operator, the incoming fleet is expected to provide increased seat capacity and improved accessibility features.

All vehicles will be equipped with the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS). The installation of ERTMS is intended to support harmonisation of operations and contribute to more reliable and efficient traffic management.
